Have you downloaded the app yet?
If so, congratulations and welcome to Setlr! If not, follow the download links here.
After installing the app, you'll start on your Translator Dashboard. If this is your first time using the app, the dashboard will be blank because you haven't updated your profile with your languages yet. Let's do that now...
Update your profile with your languages
Step 1: Touch the circle image placeholder next to your username on the top right of the dashboard screen.
Step 2: Touch "Add" to add a new language locale pair. A language locale pair is a pair of languages that you can translate from/into, along with a geographic locale for the target language.
Example 1: English -> French (France)
Example 2: English -> French (Canada)
Using a locale, along with the target language means that clients get more 'local sounding' translation. Please only add the locale which best represents your language experience.
Step 3: Touch submit to add the pair to your profile.
Step 4: Repeat for all of your language pairs.
Tip: Add all of the language pairs that you can translate to a 'native' level, and remember to add a new pair if you can also back translate to a 'native' level, e.g. English -> French and French -> English.
Step 5: When you've added all your pairs, touch "Update" at the top right of the screen. Don't forget this step or your pairs won't be saved to your profile.
Step 6: Touch "Back"
Now you are back on your dashboard, let's run through it to get you familiar...
"Available Strings" shows you how many strings are currently available, depending on your profile and saved language pairs. Don't worry if this is zero, this is still a very early version of the app and we are working hard to on-board new clients.
"Projected Earnings" shows how much you are predicted to earn, in USD, depending on whether your translations are accepted by peer-review and the client. When projected earnings become real earnings, you'll see them appear in your Setlr wallet on the earnings screen (see the bottom menu).
The next icon is your current level. You can increase your level and boost your earning potential as you build your experience on Setlr and/or complete bonus actions. You can read more about this in our article: How much can I earn through Setlr.
"Your Credits" shows how many credits you currently have. We give every new translator 10 credits to get you started. Every time translate a string to earn money, it will cost you a credit. You can earn more credits at any time by peer-reviewing translations that have been done by your co-workers. We've found that this is the best way to make sure we deliver real quality to the client.
So let's translate our first string!
"Current string ready for translation" is the string that is being offered to you. You have a limited time to choose whether you want to translate this string, before it is offered to another Community Translator.
Swipe right or left to browse available strings, or tap "Accept" when you're ready to work on the current string.
If you need a little context, you can tap "Load previous/next string for context".
When you're happy with the right translation to use in the current context of the job, type your translation into the "Enter your translation" field and tap "Save".
You'll notice your credits have decreased while your projected earnings have increased. When your strings have passed peer-review (see below), and your client has approved the final job, these projected earnings will beome actual earnings and appear in your Setlr wallet. You can access your wallet by touching "Earnings" on the bottom menu. You can read more about "Payouts" and what happens next regarding payment here: How/when do I get paid?
Earning more credits
You can earn credits at any time by carrying out peer-reviews on translations that have been done by other Community Translators.
On your dashboard screen tap "Earn Credits".
Take a look at the source string and the translated string. What do you think?
Perfect translation? Tap "Good to go". Thanks for your review! You've earned a credit.
Not 100% accurate? Tap "Suggest" and you have the opportunity to enter a more accurate version of the translation. When you're happy with your version, touch "Save". Thanks for your suggestion! You've earned a credit, and if your suggested version of the translation is peer-approved, you'll also receive the projected earnings.
You can peer-review strings to earn credits as many times as you like (if there are strings available), and when you get back to your dashboard you should see your credits have increased. Now you can do more paid translating (if there are strings available) - yey!
Building experience and boosting your earnings
As you complete more strings and build your experience on Setlr, you can level up to boost your earning potential. The higher your level, the more you earn - pretty awesome right?
You can also complete a couple of bonus actions to significantly boost your earning potential in the early days.
